Signs of Fall

Ruby-throated Hummingbirds are now stacking up in large numbers along the Texas mid coast. All afternoon long we have had up to forty that we could count out the back door and that was only about a third of the backyard. They are visiting the feeders as well as nectar plants, especially the salvia. This is the first afternoon all week that they would tolerate each other enough to allow as many as six to nectar at the same feeder. As soon as they build up an energy reserve most will make the seven hundred mile leap across the Gulf to the Yucatan. A front is expected to make it through the area Sunday or Monday and that may give them a tall wind. We did get to watch one adult male Rufous.
