Introducing Mystery Class #2
Honolulu, Hawaii
( 21.308 N, 157.817 W)

Greetings from Mystery Class #2, Lutheran High School, Honolulu, Hawaii!

Ahoha!

Lutheran High School is located in the capital city of Honolulu, on the island of O'ahu. O'ahu is part of the Hawaii Islands which are located in the middle Pacific Ocean. We are the fiftieth state of the United States, and we are known also as the "Aloha" state. We have two official languages: Hawaiian and English. Some elementary students attend Hawaiian Language Schools where all the instruction is in Hawaiian.

Nene geese are found here in Hawaii, and they are very unique. They are the only waterfowl adapted to living on lava flows, and you can see this in their feet, where they have mostly lost the webbing between their toes. But their population is engangered, so many steps are in place to preserve them.. Hawaii may be the only state without snakes.

The weather is usually sunny and warm. Most days the thermometer reaches to about 85 degrees Fahrenheit, but because of the trade winds it is very comfortable. Because of the good climate, many people spend a lot of time outdoors, going to the beach, biking, hiking or participating in other outdoor activities. People also enjoy the beautiful sunrises, sunsets and rainbows which can be seen almost every day.

Our school is located across the street from the University of Hawaii. It is close to the downtown area of Honolulu as well as the famous Diamond Head and Waikiki. LHS is a small Christian college prep high school. There are about 20 staff members and about 140 students. The school mascot is the Lion and the colors are navy blue and white. There are 8 periods but most students have one study hall. The school day begins at 7:45 and ends at 3:00.

The Spanish students at school submitted the Mystery Class clues and introduction. They have been participating in the Journey North Monarch butterfly project for two years. In the fall the students send paper butterflies with messages written in Spanish to other students. In the springtime, they receive paper butterflies and messages from students in Mexico and other parts of the United States.
