  • NEWS FLASH: March 16, 2004
    For some of the "experienced ultracranes," migration is underway! We received word that several of the 2001 and 2002 whooping cranes -- but no 2003 chicks -- have departed Florida on their spring migration. Find out how many and which ones in today's News Flash!
  • Whooping Crane Migration Update: March 26, 2004
    Migration is underway in both flocks! Four older ultracranes are still sharing space with all 16 chicks at Chassahowitzka NWR. But by the end of last week, 13 of the hatch year '01/'02 ultralight-led whooping cranes had departed. Male #106 is already back in Wisconsin! Where are the others? Learn about a crane cam and crane tracking, and ponder 3 new challenge questions.
  • Whooping Crane Migration Update: April 2, 2004
    Eight of the 16 chicks started their FIRST spring migration March 30! Four older ultracranes are already back in Wisconsin, and several Aransas whoopers blew out of there on good winds. Sara shares more great photos and comments with journaling questions, and you’ll dig into this week’s satellite data with Challenge Question #8. That's just SOME of the fun that's in store!
  • Whooping Crane Migration Update: April 9, 2004
    All 16 chicks are now on their first unaided journey north! Fifteen of the twenty '01 & '02 ultracranes have completed their 2004 spring migration. Two are en route and 3 still wintering. About one-third of the crane families have left Texas for their Canadian nesting grounds. Migration is in full swing! The bad news is human harassment of the chicks at a migration stopover. See more of Sara’s photos, and sharpen your pencils for a new CQ!
  • Whooping Crane Migration Update: April 16, 2004
    “Here a crane, there a crane, everywhere a Whooping Crane” sums up a wild week for migrating whoopers. The 16 chicks have split and scattered, with the northernmost ones in Ohio. Only #214 remains in Florida. In the main lock, whoopers have been reported from Texas to North Dakota, with only 9 of 194 left at Aransas!
  • Whooping Crane Migration Update: April 23, 2004
    Whoopee! Three of the 16 chicks have have arrived back at Necedah, and where are the others? How will they know where and when to stop? Joe’s audio clips explain. All but one of the "experienced ultracranes" are in Wisconsin. In the main flock, only 3 of the 194 remain at Aransas. Whoopers are crossing into Canada and will start arriving on the breeding grounds any day. See photos and meet the first HY2004 ultra-chick, hatched April 19.

    Just three '03 ultracranes have completed their migration, and 3 Aransas cranes haven't yet started! Eight ultracranes are stalled, not knowing what to do when they reach Lake Michigan.   • NEWS FLASH! May 20, 2004
    After eluding trackers for the past 33 days, ultra-crane #302 showed up in Wisconsin! To the immense relief of the WCEP team, he spent the night of May 19 roosting approximately 28 miles from the new Eastern flock's summer home.
