Manatee
Migration Update: February 4, 2004
Our top notch manatee scientists are ready for you to join them in
several important research projects. Five satellite-tracked manatees
are already on the move, ready for you to get started tracking and
mapping their migrations. And Ranger Wayne Hartley reports that there
have been record numbers of manatees at Blue Spring State Park again
this year, but fewer calves. Do you know why?. Dive in, a fascinating
new season of reports, photos, and lessons starts today! |

Manatee
Migration Update: February 18, 2004
One manatee has REALLY been moving--can you tell which one? And why
didn't the others follow along? Wonder how a manatee moves--watch
a video clip and find out. Ranger Wayne is taking attendance and wants
you to join him. Get familiar with "The Run". Do you know
why his manatee count changes each day? Hungry for geography? Try
this edible map--you've never seen (or eaten) a map like this before!
Plus, Nancy's almost ready for your Ask the Expert questions. |

Migration Update: February 25, 2004
Today's Update answers last week's Challenge Questions with a few
of your responses too! Who was the "marathon" manatee--study
the "moving" animated map to see and learn how unique it
was. Listen to Ranger Wayne explain what drives the different daily
manatee count numbers at Blue Spring. And try this "cool"
experiment on why manatees don't tolerate cold water temperature.
Plus a new mystery photo. |

Manatee
Migration Update: March 3, 2004
Your day has come--Ranger Wayne wants you "in the canoe"!
Can you tell him which manatees are in the Run today? And the latest
migration maps are in--which manatees have visited new territory,
where and why? Meet Dr. Holly Edwards, who has the results of the
latest statewide aerial manatee count. What do the aerial count numbers
really mean and why can they be controversial? Ask the Expert is now
open! Have
you submitted your manatee questions for Nancy yet? |

Migration Update: March 10, 2004
Today's Update answers last week's Challenge Questions. Listen to
Ranger Wayne's audio answer and find out who correctly identified
the manatees. What did the weather maps reveal about aerial manatee
counts? What effect do water surface conditons have--"see"
for yourself in the photo study. And what do manatee counts really
mean about population? Last, but not least, have you thought of any

Migration Update: March 17, 2004
Why are some manatees heading offshore to Cape Romano? Look at the
latest migration data and maps to find out who and why. And study
our videos which let you try to identify a moving manatee, fly an
aerial count from the classroom cockpit, and test the lungs of a human
and a manatee. Who do you think has more lung power?

Migration Update: March 24, 2004
Today's Update answers last week's Challenge Questions. Susan reveals
what is attracting manatees offshore. Find out from Ranger Wayne if
your correctly identified the moving manatee--are you now a part of
his research team? And are you ready to join the aerial flight crew--how
many manatees did you count? |

Manatee
Migration Update: March 31, 2004
What's happened to Anna and Actual? There's no tracking data being
received from their tags, so a search is under way. Meanwhile, another
manatee has headed up north, and others keep leaving the lush seagrass
bed to come back inland. Why? Check the latest migration maps and
data to see for yourself. Are you hungry? Could you eat as much as
a Manatee-even if you were eating pizza? And why do manatees continually
lose teeth, but never have a shortage? Read about this and other amazing
manatee adaptations.

Migration Update: April 7, 2004
Today's Update answers last week's Challenge Questions and more. Susan
reveals what can cause satellite tracking signals to stop, and then
gives you the details on how scientists search for missing manatees--also
called "CSI Manatee". Plus we have the latest news on Anna
and Actual--only one of them is still missing. And are you sick of
all that pizza? You won't believe how much you'd have to eat to keep
up with a manatee's daily diet! |

Migration Update: April 14, 2004
Jump in and try this-could you replace a manatee's tag or "freetag"
it, without capturing it first? How BIG is big Belvedere--try your
hand at Manatee Art. And more amazing adaptations-can you "walk"
on your hands underwater like a manatee? Know anything else that can?
Plus investigate the evidence in this "CSI" Challenge. Is
Ranger Wayne all alone at Blue Spring now? |

Migration Update: April 21, 2004
Just how do you go about retagging two manatees without recapturing
them? Get all the details of Jim's "free tag re-tag" of
Belvedere and Actual. What draws the manatees out of the Blue Spring
Run in spring? Ranger Wayne delivers the answer in degrees. And the
manatee math is complete--did you calculate the correct percentages?
Plus, in recognition of Earth Day, take the online Ecological Footprint
quiz! How do you measure up? |

As
the manatee migration season draws to a close, we thank all of the
Scientists for sharing there time and expertise! What conclusions
can you draw about manatee migration, based on the research you have
witnessed? Get the final words from Susan, Jim and Ranger Wayne. Write
your own scientific paper, play the Adaptation Match Game and take
the Pop Quiz. Consider why manatees need our help and protection,
what you can do and why human population growth impacts the world
we all share. Plus, we invite you to send your thanks and share your
thoughts. |
