Migration Target Day + 7

Crosswinds but a Training Flight
How could west winds cause problems when the birds are leaving Necedah?

Today broke cool and sunny, with a light frost. It was close to perfect, but the wind came from the west at 7 mph. This wasn't a headwind, but was is called a crosswind, and would have blown the birds from the side as they were trying to move south. So they didn't take off again today.

Fortunately, the conditions did permit the birds to take a training flight for the first time in a week. Will they take off tomorow? Stay tuned!

Try This! Journaling Questions
  • How important are training flights? Do you think today's training flight may have been as important in the long term as if the cranes had taken off today?
  • Look at the crane migration map. What is the one stretch of migration when west winds might be helpful?
