Celebrating the Return
Each April the citizens of scenic Kodiak Island in the Gulf of Alaska celebrate the return of the gray whales to the north. "Migration Without Borders" was one theme of Whale Fest Kodiak. How does this art—with a whale in the colors of the flags of Mexico, Canada, the U.S.A. and Alaska— help explain the theme? Nearly all Pacific gray whales pass Kodiak Island on their migration. Some of these grays remain there to feed all summer before embarking again in fall on one of the longest mammal migrations on Earth.
