Northward Bound?
Peak numbers of gray whales are passing Tofino on the west coast of Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada. Not all of them keep plowing onward to the Arctic, however. Each year a group of 200 – 250 gray whales known as the Eastern Pacific Feeding Aggregation stays and feeds around here through the season as prey blooms occur. They move offshore in late October or early-November, and join in with the rest of the grays on the southward migration.
