Feeding and Fattening in Food-rich Seas

With arctic ice melting further north, whales can now reach the northern limits of their feeding grounds in the Bering and Chuckchi Seas. Feeding and fattening are a whale's main goals on the summer feeding grounds. Gray whale moms are teaching their still-nursing young to scoop up and eat tiny amphipods off the ocean floor. Eating and growing, the calves gain blubber before their first journey south.
