Birdwatchers
use these kinds of field marks to identify males of each species.
What else did you notice?
Ruby-throated
(male)
Bright
red throat that sparkles (But it can an look black
in some light.)
Greenish
back, "dirty" white on chest
Forked
tail
Rufous
(male)
Throat, tail, and sides that are brownish-red or
rust colored (That's what rufous means!)
White
chest
Females of each species look very different from the males.
Roll your mouse over each bird to see how the female looks.
What are the field marks for the females? Watch your feeders
and flowers this spring!
