North and west winds blow monarchs toward the Atlantic coast. When the butterflies reach the ocean they can avoid open water by traveling southward along the shoreline. When monarchs encounter a peninsula, they are funneled to the tip. This makes places like Cape May, NJ, Assateague, VA and Cape Charles, VA hot-spots for watching migration. |
