Challenge Question #3

Dear Journey North,

We are a third grade class at Kanawha School in Davisville, WV. We
have some suggestions for solving the problem in Challenge Question #3.
Different students had different ideas.

1. Try to divide the forests in half. Save one half for the monarchs
and one half for the people who are poor.

2. Some students thought all the trees should be kept for the monarchs
because the monarchs would die without trees to live in during the
winter an they could become extinct. Some said not to save any of the
trees because there are still a lot of monarchs in the world.

3. The people should try to get new jobs. One student said that maybe
they could go somewhere else to get a job.

4. Students thought the people could maybe plant more trees so there
would be room for the monarchs and the people could have more trees to
cut.

5. We also thought maybe they could plant bigger gardens and sell half
of the crops for money.

6. Could the government be the only people to cut down the trees?
Then they could be sure to only get what they really need.

7. People could vote about whether the Mexican government should give
money to the people so they can stay alive and have food for their
families and not cut down the trees. Maybe the President of Mexico
could give the people a loan so they could save the trees.

8. Rich people could give money to the Mexican people so they won't
have to cut down the trees.

9. Could they cut down trees in other places at a different level of
the mountains since the monarchs go only to certain heights or levels on
the mountains.

This was a really interesting question that caused a lot of discussion
within our class. We have learned a lot from a very wonderful book with
loads of information about monarchs called An Extraordinary Life (the
Story of a Monarch Butterfly by Laurence Pringle. We look forward to
trying to answer more Challenge Questions from Journey North.

Sincerely,
Mr. Phillips's Third Grade Class
