Eagles carry their prey with their talons instead of their beaks because
it is easier to grasp their prey this way. Also, it is easier for them
to fly with greater speed. Another reason for holding their prey with
their talons is that it leaves their air passage clear so they can
breathe with more efficiency. Eagles also might use their talons for
gripping their food for protection against others that might try to
steal their food.
