Whales would go to large breeding grounds during the birth of calves.
When they are in a group, the mothers giving birth and the new calves
are protected from predators. They feed in separate groups because if
they are still in a large group, some of the whales will finish the food
supplies, in an area, leaving little or no food for the rest. Separating
ensures that there will be enough food for all.
