Aside from nectar, monarchs need milkweed (it has many types). Wherever milkweed grows, monarchs thrive. The monarch butterfly is found throughout North and South America wherever the milkweed grows. The timing of the monarch butterflies' migration coincides with the blooming of the milkweed.
