Aside from nectar, monarch butterflies need water which may come from rivers, lakes, and other water sources. Liquid from fruits is also a very important water and food source. Monarch larvae eat milkweed as well. Food might be related to the timing of migration, because the fruits in which they get water. They need to be in season and ripe. For example, if the monarchs migrated in the winter, fruits wouldn't be ripe and that would be less of a food source for the butterflies.
