Dear Western Monarch Friends,

The time has finally come for monarchs to leave the California coast and spread their wings to recolonize the West. Sighting reports become scarce as they disperse far and wide, mating and laying eggs as they go. This week’s reports were centered in California as monarchs were seen migrating east from the coast. New shoots of emerging milkweed are also appearing to greet them on their journey.

Dear fellow flock of birders,

This past week birders have been seeing some new migrant arrivals in Dane County but not necessarily in the Arboretum. Eventually they will appear in the Arb too.

Dear Western Monarch Friends,

Monarch sightings are on the rise this week particularly in Southern California but also more inland in Moreno Valley. A monarch was also reported in Las Vegas, Nevada, and several were seen in Arizona. As the migration continues, keep an eye out for worn-winged and aged overwintering monarchs expanding their range your way. Is your milkweed up and hearty nectar ready?

Dear fellow flock of birders,

We’ve now moved into Daylight Saving Time. It does not help us in the morning. Sunrise tomorrow is at 7:09 am. It does not make sense to change our start time to 7:00 am yet. Let’s wait a few weeks so that the sun will be up when we arrive at 7:00.
