Slow metabolism is a useful adaptation for whales because the whales must
have extra blubber to stay warm for the frigid arctic waters in their
migration. Blubber also keeps whales buoyant. Blubber even stores food so
the whales can eat huge amounts when and where foood is plentiful, and
when food is scarce whales live off the food they have stored. Humans do
not migrate or live in water, so that we do not need to support on blubber
to survive in frigid arctic waters.
