This answer is from Mrs. Busher?s 4th Grade Gateway at Dudley Elementary School in Virginia
We think people use more energy than butterflies in the winter because people use a lot of energy to heat their homes. Butterflies stay together to keep warm. If they are looking for water and the temperature gets cold, then they shiver so they can crawl to a higher elevation to get away from their predators. Shivering butterflies use a lot of energy but we think humans use more energy because they can?t adapt to the cold as easily as the butterflies.
