Hummingbirds in Rain and Storms

"A female ruby-throat rode out the gusty tail-end of Tropical Storm Lee on the bouncing branch of a redbud tree next to the feeder outside our classroom window," reports Pleasantville School from Virgina.

What does a hummer do in a thunderstorm? Christina Rollo sent this video clip to show us.

Enjoying the Show in Texas
As hummingbirds vacate the north, people in the south see them come and go in waves:

"We had an extremely large wave last week, most likely a result of Hurricane Irene. Another wave started showing up this morning," wrote a Bay City, Texas observer on Tuesday.

"Swarms of birds around my 3 feeders for the past week. I have put out about 20 cups of nectar!" came the word from Huntsville, Texas.

"They are hitting my feeders alot trying to bulk up. Had a bunch of them leave last Saturday on the north wind," a woman wrote on Wednesday from Hallsville, Texas.

Mystery Hummingbird?
"I have a creature feeding outside my front door. This unusual-looking 'Thing' has the wings of a hummingbird and it hovers like a hummingbird. Its body resembles a very large insect. The most amazing thing of all is its beak or bill. It is very long and curves downward! What is this strange hummingbird thing?" See the mystery hummingbird!

Thanks to everyone for sharing their first-hand, backyard observations of North America's favorite birds! Please continue to tell us what you see.
