Saying Farewell?
"The last time you see them every consecutive day is the end of the local hummingbirds and the start of the flood of migrants," believes ornithologist Laura Erickson. "This will be a significant date to compare from year to year." For Laura in Duluth, Minnesota, that date this year was Sept. 20—at least two weeks later than her day-to-day hummingbird date in previous years. But which is your last hummer of the season? You won't know it when you see it, but you can determine the date if you note on your calendar every day you see a hummer in your yard. Collect, share and save your data year to year and you'll make discoveries of your own!
