Vacating the North
More people (400) reported this week than last (333), yet more single-bird sightings added up to 53 fewer birds in total. Males represented just 58 of the 954 hummingbirds reported by Journey South observers. A north wind around October 3rd and 4th of produced good migrating conditions. Our data show that hummers advanced south in two waves: one group at 38 degrees N. and one group at 41 degrees N. Illinois observers reported the highest number of hummingbirds (120), followed by Texas (208). Hummers are stacking up in Alabama and Georgia, too, as they continue their journey south to the wintering grounds.

"WooHoo! My first sighting in three days. I imagine the colder air to the north started her south." Jessica.. in King George, VA 10/06/14
