Fueling and Fattening
Depending on weather conditions and refueling opportunities, birds will remain in the area for a few days to a week before departing on another migratory flight. You can see that this yard has been readied for winter, and the observer noted the low temperature of 39 degrees F. on Oct. 20. As long as it has food, a hummingbird can survive moderate freezing temperatures. Warming the food after a cold night is both a kindness and a lifesaver. Learn more about a special hummer adaptation for dealing with cold in this week's "Explore" section.
