Highlights from the Migration Trail
What Can You Learn from Observers?

(Back to Today's Update - 3/13/08)

What can you learn about hummingbirds and their migration based on what observers report? Read these highlights from the past week, then discuss or write responses to the "Think" question.

Greenbank, WA: "In the last couple of years we've had Anna's hummingbirds in the winter. It's funny as you watch. This year we began to see them leaving. This alerted us to the fact that the Rufous hummingbirds must be near."

Cannon Beach, OR: I spotted a male Rufous this afternoon at the feeder. He is running a couple of weeks early this year. We had several Anna's hummingbirds all winter. Mr. Rufous usually bullies the Anna's out.

Think: What can you infer about Rufous hummingbirds from these 2 reports? What questions do you have?
