Highlights from the Migration Trail
What Can You Learn from Observers?

(Back to Today's Update - April 10, 2008)

What can you learn about hummingbirds and their migration based on what observers report? Read this week's highlights, then discuss or write responses to the "Think" question.

Campbell River, British Columbia, Canada: Put my feeder out two days ago, when the red-flowering currant came into bloom and today, two days later, I have seen my first Rufous Hummingbird at it.

Maple Ridge, British Columbia, Canada: Had a confirmed male rufous at my feeder tonight. Had our first male on 23 March of last year and thought these guys would be early. Have flowering currant blooms starting to open in the garden (10 ft. from the feeder), so this guy sure timed it right!

Mooresville, North Carolina: What a lovely surprise! Been waiting so long. A female rubythroat, skinny from her travels, dined on fresh sugar nectar in our feeder this morning!

Think: What did you learn about hummingbirds? List 2 things. What do you wonder?
