Red Dye Alert Virtually all hummingbird feeders have red parts. The feeder alone, filled with fresh sugar-water (4:1—water:sugar) is sufficient for attracting hummingbirds. There is no need to put red coloring in your sugar-water nectar. In fact, although there is no scientific evidence, experts feel the red dye could be toxic to hummingbirds.
