Nancy Newfield has been banding hummingbirds in Louisiana and other Gulf Coast states for over 35 years. Her research work helps scientists learn more about the habits of wintering and migratory ruby-throated hummingbirds in Louisiana.

Nancy spotted her first of the year (FOY) in a small wooded area between the Mississippi River and the Lake Ponchatrain levee.

"On Sunday, 22 February 2015, I observed an adult male ruby-throated hummingbird in bright, shiny-fresh plumage that appeared to me to fit the bill of a northbound migrant. In my experience, wintering adult male ruby-throats, which are few and far between, do not usually present with the same brilliance as do incoming migrants." Harahan, Louisiana
