Males Displaying Gorget A male hummingbird's gorget feathers have a unique structure that give them colorful brilliance when hit by the sun from a certain direction. During courtship dives, the male orients himself to the sun to attract the attention of nearby females. Flashing his gorget is also a way he can strut his stuff in an attempt to intimidate other males who dare to invade his territory.
