Here
we are, to meet our friends of this project.
We are Mystery Class #4, in Campina Grande, Brazil!!
|
Our
School |
We
are students in Campina Grande, Brazil. Our teacher is
Mrs. Patricia Araujo
,
and she has been teaching for a long time (about 15 years). Our
school is a private school. It is a Catholic confessional school.
Its name is Virgin de Lourdes School; our Saint is The Holy Mary
of Lourdes. We love this school. Some of us students have attended
this school since Kindergarden. Inside of it we have many gardens
with statues of saints, such as this statue of The Holy Mary of
Lourdes.
Here
is another photo at our school, showing an interior garden area.
With this Mystery
Class project, we were proud to be part of this global event. Also,
we were very excited to look for the clues for the other secret
locations, just like all of you. It was so interesting to discover
so many important things about other countries. It was a wonderful
experience for all of us.
In this photo
you can see us hard at work with our Datasheets just like you did.
You
can see our Journey North Mystery Class display and map on our classroom
wall. Does this look like your classroom too? We learned about so
many different subjects including math, science, geography, culture
and about our own country too.
In
addition to the guidance from our teacher Mrs. Patricia Araujo,
our Math teacher Mrs. Jadilene gave us a great support to research
our questions, and so did our Geography teacher Mr. José
Roberto.
Here
are their photos so you can meet them:

Our
City |
Our city is
located in the interior of a great country called Brazil. Citizens
of Campina Grande are a peaceful people. We are so friendly, and
we like to have different people among us. Our hospitality is our
welcome card. Campina Grande is a small interior city, but it is
an eternal love poem to the beauty, a blessed place in Brazil, as
the author of our Hymn declares. This aerial photo shows our wonderful
city!
Our
people like celebrations and we have two great annual celebrations
in the city. One is in April and it is called "Micarande",
which is a kind of Carnival (which is usually celebrated in Brazil
in February).
The
other celebration is during the month of June and is "The greatest
Saint June celebration of the world" according to our foreign
country visitors. This event is in honor of three Catholic Church
Saints: Saint Antonio; Saint John and Saint Peter. This event is
celebrated for one whole month; every night has a lot of shows,
with land artists and bands. And we receive visitors from all over
the world!!! Our city is famous for its singers and music, specially
Forró.
Our
city has been growing a lot during the last twenty years. Here are
a few photos of the city scenes.

This
first photo shows our cathedral. |
Monument
of important artists Jackson do Pandeiro and The Baião
king "Luis Lua Gonzaga". |
Our language
in Campina Grande and in Brazil is Portuguese, that’s why
we had some problems understanding some of the texts. But we learned
how to overcome the obstacles and make them disappear. We were united
in all problems and tried to solve them.
We have a pleasant
climate in Campina Grande. It is because our city is situated in
the "Borborema Serra".
We like to study;
we have famous Universities in our city. Students from many different
parts of Brazil and the world come here to study or to know the
UFCG; UFPB; UEPB; FACISA; and others schools.
Our food is
a little bit different from yours. We like corn food such as Canjica
(Indian word) and Pamonha. We like "Tapioca", which is
kind of a pancake made by manioc flour and coconut or butter. These
are typical foods during St. June’s month. In our daily life
we like to eat "Galinha à Cabidela" and "Green
beans" ; Goat ; and Pig . The chefs prepare these foods in
a special way. They are so delicious. We like to eat some fishes,
especially with coconut sauce. So, we are like any other people.
Here
is a delicious recipe for you to try: "Moqueca de Banana"
(It is a kind of banana cake for lunch!)
Moqueca
de Banana
Some
bananas (about 10)
2 cups of wheat flour
150 gr of butter
3 eggs
½ cup of milk
1 cup of sugar
A teaspoon of baking powder
A coffee spoon of lemon juice
Preheat
oven to 350F. Prepare a normal cake pan by greasing it with
a little butter and then a little flour.
How
to make the cake: Cut the bananas and set aside. In a bowl
beat the egg whites.
In
a separate bowl, mix the yolk, sugar, butter, milk and the
lemon juice. Add the flour and baking powder. When combined,
fold in the egg whites.
Pour
into your prepared pan and bake until done. Good Taste!

Our
State |
We are located
in the state of Paraiba. This photo shows part of the city of João
Pessoa, which is our beautiful state capital.
João
Pessoa has beautiful and interesting beaches. It is the third oldest
city in Brazil. It has the title of the second most-forested city
in the World, second only to Paris!
Did you know
that it is called the city in the Americas "where the sun rises
first", and also the "easternmost city in the Americas?"
This is because it is located along the eastern-most border of South
America. That also makes it the place on this continent which is
nearest to Africa and Europe.
You have many
interesting places to visit: Tambaba; Santa Catarina Fortress Areia
Vermelha; Typical food restaurants; Ponta do Seixas...

Our
Country |
Brazil
is known as Republica Federativa do Brasil in Portugese, or Brasil
for short. Our official language here is Portugese, instead of Spanish
which is the official language of most other countries in South
America. However, many of us speak Spanish too, and many other languages
as well.
Brazil
is the largest country in South America, so large in fact that we
have four time zones. Our estimated total area is 8,511,965 sq km
(3,319,666 sq mi), which is only a little smaller than the United
States.
As
you can see from this map, Brazil borders every other country in
South America, except for two -- Ecuador and Chile. And we have
a very long coast line on the Atlantic Ocean, estimated to be almost
7,500 km long. Some of the most beautiful beaches in the world are
found on our Atlantic coast.
One
of the beautiful beaches on our Atlantic coastline
Our
climate here is mostly tropical, because as you can see from the
map, the north of Brazil sits right on the equator. In the south
of Brazil, the climate becomes more temperate.
Brazil
is one of the most populated nations in the world. Recent estimates
give our population as 190,010,647.
The
Brazilian population tends to concentrate along the coastline in
large urban centers. While Brazil has one of the largest populations
in the world, population density is low and the inner continental
land has large demographical empty spaces. It is a multiracial country
composed of European, Amerindian, African and Asian elements.
We
hope you have enjoyed learning about Campina Grande and Brazil.
