When he saw this image, monarch biologist Dr. Lincoln Brower noted:

"It’s interesting and valuable to have this documentation of a Cassin’s Kingbird (Tyrannus vociferans) eating a monarch — especially so because it indicates that monarchs have avian enemies along the migration route through Mexico. There are very few published records of monarch butterflies being eaten by birds in the wild so this photo is an important record."
