State-by-state Pie Chart of Spring Monarch Sightings
Which states are most important to monarchs in early spring?

State-by-state Pie Chart of Spring Monarch Sightings: 2011

Over 400 monarchs have been reported so far this spring. Look at the state-by-state distribution to see where spring breeding habitat is most critical. Use the monarch sightings in the data table and calculate percentages for each state, then label the pie chart. Check out last year's state-by-state pie chart for comparison.

1. From which state have most of this spring's monarchs been reported?

2. Imagine that you are a biologist who is responsible for monarch conservation. Name the states in which you think habitat for monarchs is most important in the early spring and explain why. What would happen if monarchs did not have good habitat in these places?
