Symbolic Monarchs in Mexico

Emiliano Zapata Elementary

Every year, every season, Journey North gets to new generations of children at schools who, for the first time, hear about Monarchs’ life cycle. It should be remarked that letters sent from Canadian and North American Children, are delivered to children from 4th, 5th, and 6th grades, (9, 10, 11 years old average) who are able to read and write. Children in 3rd. year are hardly able to read and write so, the task of responding the letter to their counterparts in the North is rather a challenge for them.

Parents and grandparents of "El Asoleadero" community, working at secondary activities having to do with the Sanctuary (providing nursery Oyamel and Pine trees, opening their forests areas as attraction to tourists, but strictly keeping territorial limits to surroundings of "El Rosario". (See nursery area at the back of the photo by the point where Rocinante is parked when arriving to the school).

Children running after Rocinante shouting "Our letters from the North are here!!!"

Both groups were gathered at the dinining room of the school where the director of the school asked to have Journey North's presentation. While the whole activity of receiving letters, explaining Monarchs' Life Cycle, and responding to letters, mothers in turn this week at the dining room of the school hurried preparing lunch for children.

A dining room at every school is a Government Proyect where the State provides the facilities, kitchen equipment and meals (grains, fruit, milk) for children through each Municipality, the point here, is, how willing the director and teachers of every school are willing to afford this responsibility to run extra to their activities, but, equally important is how willing parents of children are also willing --specially mothers--, to take turns every week to run the dining room and feed the children nutritiously; this has been a very much encouraged Federal Government Program with the intention of bringing back a healthy way to feed our children in order to have them be healthy and in much better conditions for learning, since, sad to say, mis-nutrition, due to the market full of garbage food easily available has been invading families' practices and traditions lately.

Children enthusiastically participated at going over Monarch's miraculous lives, while their mothers, while cooking for them, were just fascinated to hear opening their eyes and mouth at the surprise that Monarchs are so incredible a migrating species!.

They responded to their letters, went out to get the group photo, and enthusiastically showed to Estela what they received from their counterparts from the North!.

Finally, Estela, as often happens, capturing several children's hearts, was dropped to Rocinante by at least one of the children carrying the heavy box of Ambassador letters with Mexican Children's responses to their Canadian and NorthAmerican counterparts!.

Responding to letters to send back with the Ambassador Monarchs, group photo and showing off their gifts received.

Children, wishing Journey North's visit will not end, drop Estela to Rocinante carrying Ambassador Monarchs with response letters before they say good bye
