Amado Nervo Elementary
This school bears the name of one of the most famous poets in the Spanish language, Amado Nervo.

This school has a very high population. Journey North visited the 5th and 6th grade classrooms. Children were actively volunteering to go over Monarchs' Life Cycle. Estela explains at every school, and classroom the life cycle phases of Monarch butterflies. Children now easily recognize the different phases. Among the facts children get greatly surprised, is to know that Monarchs' main feeding stage occurs during the time when they are caterpillars.

Students understand the challenges monarchs face to survive. They talk about the environment and issues of global warming, the importance of preservation of the Oyamel forests in our region, and the milkweed fields in the North. They cannot believe that over their wintering time in our mountains the monarchs mainly drink water and hardly eat at all!

At break time, mothers and grand-mothers were selling a big variety of Mexican dishes and snacks, consisting of tortas, tacos, tostadas, pambazos, pozole, ice cream, fruit, cake, hibiscus and guava water, hot cakes, French fries, etc.

This school is in the town of Ocampo, not far from Angangueo. Most families, not to say all, specially in this big town and its communities continue making a living one way or the other, from Forest resources. For around one century, Ocampo been the site where most of the forest resources (woods) of the region have been concentrated, commercialized from first hand (basic cutting/sawing) to retailers and wholesalers in neighbouring towns and big cities. The people who live in the communities mostly surrounding El Rosario Sanctuary now make a main part of their living from it.
