Symbolic Monarch Butterfly Migration Update: October 21, 1998
Today's Update Includes:
Thousands of Butterflies Have Landed in Minnesota
Greetings from the symbolic migration staging ground in Minneapolis, where your butterflies are now resting. Once
again this year, you've managed to bury us in butterflies. In what has become an annual tradition, you sent so
many on a single day that the post office had to bring the butterflies in their own truck!
We are now preparing them for the final leg of their fall journey to Mexico. Over the next 10 days, envelopes from
each class will be opened and the butterflies will be mixed with monarchs sent from students across the U.S and
Canada. Just like the real monarchs now funneling through Texas, the symbolic monarchs will travel side by side
and spend the winter together.

Butterflies Fly Free to Mexico
We're thrilled to say that UPS (United Parcel Service) will provide transportation for the Symbolic Migration again
this year! Box and boxes full of your butterflies will be flown to Mexico by UPS's special international cargo

October 28, 1998
Inspect the pictures of kids buried in butterflies, read the clues, and then place your guess: Exactly how many
symbolic butterflies do you think are headed to Mexico?
November 2, 1998
Check the Symbolic Migration Passenger lists and make sure yours are on board. They'll fly out tonight on Mexico's
Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead), but you can track their migration LIVE to Mexico on the UPS
WWW site. Exactly how many days, hours, minutes and seconds do you think the symbolic migration will take?
November 10, 1998
By now, your butterflies will have arrived at their new home in Mexico. We'll send news from Papalote in Mexico
City, and from the schools surrounding the real monarch sanctuaries near Angangeuo. Find out how fast the butterflies
traveled, and exactly how many symbolic butterflies made the trip.
Looking for Symbolism
As you follow the migrations of real and symbolic butterflies this year, look for similarities and differences
between the migrations. Keep a list of comparisons all year and watch it grow. To get started, here are some things
to think about:

- How long does each migration take?
- Are there times during the fall, winter or spring when the entire population is at risk?
- Who is responsible for the monarchs at each stage of their lives?
- What happens when the butterflies cross national borders?
- How do the butterflies find their wintering grounds?
- What obstacles do they encounter along the way?
