This week we finally finished unpacking all of your envelopes, and now we're shoulder-deep in the thousands and thousands of beautiful butterflies you sent to us this year. Students from Lake Minnetonka Environmental School were so amazed at all of the butterflies that they jumped in to help us at the staging grounds. (Don't worry, they were very careful not to step on any of your special monarchs.) Where's Waldo? Emily, Jordan, Jenny and John discovered monarchs from Canada, Germany and most every U.S. state--including Hawaii! They couldn't find Waldo, but they did find Mrs. Wilcox. Can you find her, and your own butterfly too? Where's Mrs. Wilcox? (Click on photo to enlarge) Traveling Exhibit Now Open We've finished unpacking all of the butterflies, and made a big traveling exhibit for you to enjoy: Visit the Traveling Symbolic Butterfly Exhibit: Exhibit Room 1 Exhibit Room 2 Exhibit Room 3 Passenger Lists on the Way Right now, envelope by envelope, school by school, we are hard at work preparing the "Symbolic Migration Passenger Lists" so you can look to make sure your butterflies are on board! We'll post this list when the Butterflies continue their migration to Mexico on November 1, 1999. How Many Symbolic Butterflies Will be Flying to Mexico? (Click on photo to enlarge) We're sure you must be wondering: Challenge Question #17 "How many symbolic monarchs do you suppose there are this year?" Clues: 1) From left to right, that's Jenny Johnson, Beth Allen, Elizabeth Howard and Julie Brophy. All are normal-sized people. 2) The sea of butterflies you see measures 88" x 66" x 16". 3) You can't see it in the picture, but these butterflies fill 13 packing boxes. (Last year's butterflies filled 11 packing boxes for a grand total of 40,347 butterflies.) Now it's your turn to try counting all these butterflies. Follow the directions below and good luck! IMPORTANT: Please answer ONLY ONE question in each e-mail message! To send your answer: 1. Address an e-mail message to: jn-challenge-monarch@learner.org 2. In the Subject Line of your message write: Challenge Question #17 3. In the body of the message, answer the question above. Butterflies Ready to Take Off on Monday Mark your calendar! Your butterflies will continue on their journey to Mexico next Monday, November 1--on the eve of Mexico's Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead). When they leave Minneapolis that evening, UPS will give us the special tracking number, so you'll be able to track their migration LIVE on the UPS website. We'll post the UPS Tracking number for you no later than 8 pm and challenge you to predict: Exactly how many days, hours, minutes and seconds do you think the symbolic migration will take? Mark your calendar because here's what we're planning: November 1, 1999 The butterflies will fly out. Remember, you'll be able to track their migration LIVE to Mexico on the UPS website. Also on November 1: Plan to check the "Symbolic Migration Passenger Lists" to make sure your butterflies are on board! November 17, 1999 By now, your symbolic butterflies will have arrived at their winter home in Mexico. We'll send news from Papalote in Mexico City, and from the schools surrounding the real monarch sanctuaries near Angangeuo. Find out how fast the butterflies traveled, and exactly how many symbolic butterflies made the trip. By way of thanks, we will also list the names of the many people who are helping to conserve monarch habitat in Mexico, through a donation to the Monarch Butterfly Sanctuary Foundation.
