Bienvenido a Mexico!
"I just couldn't believe it when we opened the boxes and saw all the beautiful butterflies, " exclaimed Montera Gomez.

Montera is the young woman at Papalote Del Niño whose job it is to find 52,525 homes for your butterflies this winter. Undaunted by the task she said:
"We are very excited. It is important for Mexican children to learn about the monarch. We thank you for sending them to us!"

Meanwhile, Elizabeth Howard from Journey North has gone to deliver the remaining 2,000 butterflies to the children who live beside the mountain sanctuaries, high in the mountains west of Mexico City.
When Journey North begins in 2000, watch for short stories from these students, reports from biologists in the sanctuaries, and much more. We hope these activities, combined with the Symbolic Migration, will be meaningful for your classroom.

Several classrooms came close to estimating this number by using our clues about the size of the "sea of butterflies", and comparing the number of boxes of butterflies this year and last:
"We decided that there are 47, 684 butterflies this year. We figured that if there were 11 boxes last year and 40,347 butterflies, then we could divide that number by 11 to find out how many went in each box. Then we multiplied how many butterflies went in each box by 13 to figure out how many there were. Maybe there are more butterflies in a cubic foot this year." (Students who read the UPS Tracking Site carefully may have noticed there were 18 boxes shipped, but only 13 boxes in our clues. If you were surprised so were we! This is because the boxes had to be repackaged to meet weight restrictions. Of course this didn't change the number of butterflies.)

We asked you: "Exactly how many days, hours and minutes do you think it will take the butterflies to reach the front door of the Museo del Nino in Mexico City?"
Those of you who "tracked" the butterflies on the UPS Website know that the butterflies arrived in Mexico City on November 4 at 1:21 p.m., just 2 days, 20 hours and 59 minutes after they left the Journey North office!

A heartfelt
thanks to the children and teachers at the 445 U.S. and Canadian schools listed below
for their contributions to the Monarch Butterfly Sanctuary Foundation. Their example
reminds us of our responsibility for monarch conservation--not only when the monarchs
grace our own backyards, but also during the long months of winter.A total of $6,522 dollars was contributed during this fall's Symbolic Monarch Migration for conservation work in Mexico. (This is three times more than the same effort last year!) Watch for news this winter about how these contributions are being used in Mexico by the Monarch Butterfly Sanctuary Foundation.
Symbolic Migration Passenger List
If you haven't already done so, please carefully check for your school's name on the Symbolic Migration Passenger List:
PLEASE DON'T PANIC
If you sent butterflies to Mexico and you do not find your name on the list,
please don't be alarmed. Just follow these steps:
- LOOK AGAIN! Please check the list very, very carefully. When teachers write us
in despair, we find that over 75% simply didn't read carefully enough.
- Please do not write to us about spelling errors. With a plane to catch--and over
2,000 schools on board--we had to type quickly! We apologize in advance if your school's
name is misspelled.
- If you're certain your name is not listed, send an E-mail to Journey North and let us know: our feedback form
(Please include your full name and address, and the number of butterflies you
sent.)
The Long, Cold Winter Has Begun
While the butterflies enjoy the warmth of Mexico, all winter long we will save the
envelope you provided for the butterflies' return trip next spring. Remember, your
own butterfly is now part of the Symbolic Monarch population. Most likely, you will
NOT receive your own butterfly back in the spring. Instead, you will receive one
that has been added to the population by another student. However, because your butterfly
is carrying your address on its wing, you can hope to hear where your own butterfly
landed.
