Butterflies Will Take Off on Monday!
Mark your calendar. The butterflies will continue on their journey to Mexico next Monday, November 3. When they
leave Minneapolis that evening, UPS will give us the special tracking number. We'll post it for you no later than
8 am on Tuesday morning, November 4, and challenge you to guess how long their trip will take. Get ready now to
track the Symbolic Migration on the UPS WWW site
Thanks For the Lift
It's a long way from Minnesota to Mexico but, thanks to UPS, your butterflies will receive a free ride. We encourage
you to thank UPS directly. Without Mr. Jim Meyer, CEO of UPS Minnesota, this would not have been done! Letters
should be addressed and sent to:
Mr. Jim Meyer
District Manager
United Parcel Service
3312 Broadway Street N.E.
Minneapolis, MN 55413
Packing for The Trip
For the past 3 weeks, we have had the delightful job of opening
packages from schools across the U.S. and Canada. Like opening a present, we discovered wonderful surprises inside.
Before the butterflies leave, we'll show you as many as we can in the Symbolic Migration Art Gallery.
How Many Symbolic Butterflies Are There?
We've been keeping count as we opened each envelope and packed the butterflies into boxes. We'll have the final
number for you next week. In the meantime, place your guess as part of the first Journey North Challenge Question
of the year:
Monarch Butterfly Challenge Question #1:
How many symbolic butterflies do you think there are?
- Clues:
- We are not standing up in the picture above!
- The area filled with butterflies measures approximately 4 meters by 5 meters.
- We lost count of the number of huge mailbags we received, but we estimate there were about 30.
- Each mailbag contained between 55 and 70 envelopes full of butterflies.

Can You Find Your Butterfly?
|
When you send us your guess, please put your number in perspective. For example: If you were to guess one million,
you could say, "That's one paper butterfly for every person in the state of Idaho." Good luck! We're
eager to hear what you think.
How to Respond to Challenge Question # 1
1. Address an e-mail message to: jn-challenge-monarch@learner.org
2. In the Subject Line of your message write: Challenge Question # 1
3. In the body of the message, answer the question above.
Don't Forget!
Please include the name of your school and your location so we can credit you properly for your answers.
Coming Next Week: Symbolic Migration Passenger List
When the butterflies take off, we will post a passenger list showing the names of all schools who have sent butterflies
to Mexico. You will be asked to check the list and look for your name. Note: This list is only a safety net.
If you sent butterflies, and your name is not on the list, you will be asked to contact us and let us know.
The Next Monarch Migration Update Will be Posted November 4, 1997
