News Flash--First Gray Whales Spotted in Alaska: March 25, 1998

No sooner did we send out today's Gray Whale update than this news arrived.This unscheduled report from Alaska brings exciting news that we've all been waiting for. In today's Gray Whale report, we told you that Susan Payne expected the gray whales to arrive in Alaska any day--well the day has come! Read On!

March 25, 1998
"News we have been waiting for from Kenai Fjords Tours: the first gray whales were spotted outside of Seward, Alaska (60.100N, -149.443W) on Sunday March 22 by Reknown Charter's Captain Mike McKern."

"One the same day, 3 grays were sighted a couple of miles southwest of Rugged Island (59.855N, -149.388W). These sighting was confirmed by two other boats running for Reknown charters, the Viewfinder and the Bardy. Kenai Fjords Tours also reports that a humpback whale was spotted in Seward's Resurrection Bay the past two days. This sighting was reported by Mike Brittain who works as a captain for Kenai Fjords Tours."
