Humpback Whale Migration Update: February 18, 1998

Greetings from the Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary -- Once again I'm going to have a very short humpback whale report for you this week. I haven't been able to contact anyone in the Caribbean about the whales
down there, and it seems that there are no major research cruises to the breeding grounds this year.

The right whale researchers who have been flying aerial overflights of Cape Cod Bay and the Sanctuary have not reported any humpback whale sightings (although they have been seeing quite a few right whales -- see my right whale
report -- as well as some finbacks recently).

Challenge Question #1
My time lately has been consumed with completing a CD-ROM on the food web at Stellwagen Bank -- including entries for all our cetacean visitors. Here's a challenge question for you based on this upcoming educational product. I'll have the answer for you in my next report.

Challenge Question #1
"What do you think humpback whales are eating when they come up to Stellwagen Bank and the Gulf of Maine, and what are they eating down in the Caribbean right now?"

How to Respond to Journey North Right Whale Challenge Question # 1
1. Address an e-mail message to: jn-challenge-hwhale@learner.org
2. In the Subject Line of your message write: Challenge Question # 1
3. In the body of the message, answer the question above.

Until then, this is Anne Smrcina, education coordinator of the Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary, signing off.

The Next Humpback Whale Migration Update will Be Posted on March 4, 1998.
