- FINAL Humpback
Whale Migration Update: May 27, 1998
Whales seem to be coming back in good numbers off Cape Cod, at the
Stellwagen Bank Nat'l Marine Sanctuary. There may be some names you recognize--Compass,
Tulip and Foxfire have been spotted. While writing, Anne Smrcina reports a humpback
disentanglement effort is underway off Chatham, MA..

Migration Update: May 13, 1998
Despite winds and rain, Anne Smrcina reports on the latest Humpback
Whale sightings, including 3 new Mother/calf pairs. Anne also answers Challenge Question
# 7 about Humpback Whale reproduction. But some sad news too, as a yearling Humpback
is found washed up on a beach.

Migration Update: April 29, 1998
Humpback Whales have returned North on both coasts! Sightings have
been reported in the Gulf of Maine on the Atlantic coast, and in Glacier Bay Alaska
on the Pacific coast. Several mother/calf pairs were reported in the Gulf of Maine.
Plus, read the names that were chosen by researchers and naturalists in the Whale-Naming
contest.

Migration Update: April 1, 1998
Some humpback mothers and calves are still in Samana Bay, but most
of the other whales seem to have left those sheltered waters in the Caribbean. Whalewatching
in Massachusetts is underway. In Hawaii, breaching behavior is not being seen, suggesting
that the older, competitive groups have already departed, leaving the late mothers
to nurse their calves.

Migration Update: March 18, 1998
Humpbacks have been spotted in the Great South Channel, southeast
of Cape Cod. The Channel is a major shipping lane along the East Coast, cutting between
land and the shallow area known as Georges Bank. Why would whales want to stay in
the Great South Channel even though large ships are constantly moving through the
area?

Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary has extended the deadline
for the Name a Humpback Whale contest to April 9th. Same
rules apply. Schools that previously submitted entries are welcome to submit additional
names.
