Tulip Garden Update: November 14, 1997 One season slips into another...that is what Journey North gardeners experienced first-hand in the past few weeks since our last update. In fact, many gardeners were greeted with cooler temperatures and even snow when it came time to plant their tulip gardens! As you'll see on today's tulip data below and on the map, we had 105 additional gardens reported since our last update, places all across North America and in Scotland and Germany too. Important reminders are also provided below about the Phenology Data Exchange now underway, and the Mapping suggestions for fall tulip garden data. Click Here to Visit the Full Tulip Database 11/05/97 Illinois "We planted our tulip bulbs by the school flagpole and near the school entrance. Students were very enthusiastic about this. We have had a mild autumn, but when we were ready to plant we had to delay our planting twice because of early snow! We planted the tulips in the a.m.. By the end of the school day, it was started to snow and switched to rain; so the bulbs were well watered. :-)."Grade 4 (bmellskog@galenalink.com) 10/30/97 Scotland " We planted our garden today! I notice that someone took some bulbs across the Atlantic to plant in their grandfather's garden in Glasgow! It'll be interesting to see when they flower. I would expect it to be even earlier than ours, as the West Coast of Scotland benefits from the Gulf Stream. They even have outdoor palms in some parts!" Lesia Miller" (lm@st-andrews.ac.uk) 11/03/97 New York City "I just planted 10 tulip bulbs as part of my Biology project, but also for Journey North. Although professionals say that New York City is not the best place to grow tulips, we decided to try. We have a 12ft by 16ft planting area that belongs to my school. We will record the growth in the spring, and throughout the cold months." Grade 7 10/20/97 Minnesota "Here is a picture of my first graders as we completed our tulip planting on October 20. We made sure the tulips bulbs were 4 inches apart and 7 inches deep (check our rulers!). Digging and raking was also part of the fun. Each child also brought a bulb home for "control" and enjoyment."
