The Migrations Are Underway!
Somebody must have told the Eastern Eagles that it's spring! Just as we were about to send this week's update, new data arrived showing they're on their way. These eagles won't hold still long enough for us to write...thus the delay in sending today's news.

Field Notes From Biologist Peter Nye
Hi All,
We've got a mass exodus! I've been up in Quebec skiing last few days, and from the looks of things, I should've stayed up there. Maybe I would have seen one of our birds go by! Eagle #F43 has definitely begun to boogey; I haven't had time yet to check the map with these data, but will be interested to see her path compared to last year's. I assume you all know where she is going, right?? Look at last year's map and data, then see if you can answer this question:

"How does Eagle #F43 departure date this year compare to her 1998 date? Why do you think it's different--or the same?"

It looks like Eagle #F83 is continuing his move north--and Eagle #F81's on the move again now, too. Where do you suppose he's going?! However, our "late" eagle, Eagle #F44, is still sitting tight down here in the wintering area, just like last year.

Students at Academy School in Brattleboro, VT live quite near the wintering grounds of our eagles. Let's see what they had to say:
"We think that the eagle F81 flew back to its wintering area on March 8 because it was very cold and windy and there had just been a big snow storm. Maybe it could not find good shelter or food or was just too cold."

Stephanie, a student in Mr. Hibbard's Class in Parsippany, N.J., was thinking along the same lines:
"#F81 might have retreated back to his wintering grounds probably because of the changes of weather. For instance, on the day he flew north the weather was probably warm. But after a few days, the weather might have become cold. Then #F81 might think it's winter again, and he flew back to the wintering grounds." Ashu agreed: "#F81 might have returned because he sensed a storm coming." (rhibbard@pthsd.k12.nj.us)
Here's Peter Nye's answer
"Cold and snow! I bet the massive snowstorm we got on March 6-7, and the very cold temperatures, 'pushed'
him back. We got a big snowstorm and very cold weather here in Albany on March 6-7; 10 inches of snow! Notice
that #F43 also went north on March 5, then by March 7 had dropped back south a bit."
