Hummingbird Migration Update: April 22, 1999

News Flash from Fenton
Buried among this week's 99 hummingbird sightings we found a note: "This one is MINE!!"
"IS THIS TRULY YOURS LANNY!?!" Journey North wrote to the observer.
"Yup," replied hummingbird expert Lanny Chambers from Fenton, MO. "We were expecting our first bird early, a week ago, when the lilacs started blooming, but the weather turned colder last week, with a couple of nights in the 30s. As you can see on the map, this stalled the migration's advance over a large area. Yesterday was the second warm day since the cold snap, and the first birds arrived in the evening. My wife saw two males fighting over one of our feeders while I was out running an errand; after I got back, I saw one bird just before dark. FYI, except for last year's El Nino weirdness, our first hummer has always appeared on April 20, plus or minus 2 days, so for us this year is quite typical."
We suggest you find Fenton, MO on your migration map, and put a big star there in honor of Lanny Chambers--and the tiny hummingbird that found his way to Fenton this spring.
