Latest Tulip Garden Data

Congratulations to Canadian Gardeners!
All this time they've waited patiently, while students in 256 other gardens reported their news. But at last, students in New Brunswick and Manitoba finally have this to proclaim:

Their tulips have EMERGED at last!

New Brunswick (46.13 N, -64.88 W)
"One of our tulips finally emerged yesterday, May 3. It is about 1 inch tall. It was very cold last week. We even had snow on Wednesday. Yesterday and today we are having highs of 80 F. What a change! We hope that spring is here to stay."
Magnetic Hill School, Lutes Mountain, NB (mcgrara@nbed.nb.ca)

Manitoba (49.92 N, -97.12 W)
"Finally!!! Grade 3, Room 22 Frontenac School are excited that our tulips are beginning to emerge. We can now join the other gardeners who are waiting for their flowers to bloom."
Frontenac School, Winnipeg, MB (marlene.mortimer@stboniface.winnipeg.mb.ca)

Challenge Question #19
"How did your predictions compare to the actual results? What did you learn that surprised you the most?"

(To respond to this question, please follow the instructions below.)

Still Waiting for Spring in Lapland, Finland
Although their tulips are still buried under snow, there are signs that spring is on its way:

"The students of Utsjoen saamelaislukio checked our Tulip Garden and found 9.06 inches snow above it. The length of the day (sunrise-sunset) is almost 20 hours and the nights are already light. Here is a list of other signs of spring in Utsjoki (69.90 N, 26.90 E):
  • reindeer calves are born in May
  • people are guessing when the ice will go out of the River Teno
  • snow has melted around base of trees
  • migratory birds are back
  • people are smiling more
  • you don't need as much sleep as in the winter
  • there is no snow on the roads & few snowmobile sounds are heard
  • fixing the fishing equipment ready for the summer season
  • people start to fix the river boats
  • snowboards and skis are taken to winter garage
  • clothes are getting lighter
  • cleaning the house of winter equipment
  • people have dried reindeer meat
  • the last ice-fishing competitions take place
  • reindeer competition season is already over
