That means another bull's-eye winner in our 2002 contest!

CONGRATULATIONS to the team called "The Village People" from Christine Jamieson's class at Ernestown Secondary School in Odessa, Ontario Canada. These 12th grade geography students nailed it when they predicted May 7 for ice-out on the Tanana River!

This compares with ice-out dates of May 8th last year and May 1st in 2000. In addition to 2000, 2001, and 2002, recent May breakups for the Tanana River include May 5, 1996 and May 14, 1992.

Two More to Go!
There's still ice at Hudson Bay and the Chuckchi Sea, from where Point Hope teacher Sheila Gaquin wrote on May 2: "We've still got a great deal of sea ice, though some leads have opened and whaling has begun. Our school closes May 17th, and we definitely will not have ice out by then. It will be closer to the 4th of July, which is sort of the standard ice out date." Send your entries FAST for
