News Flash: Ice-out at River Teno in Utsjoki, Finland (Lapland)

The official news just arrived from teacher Annikkki Lauerma in Utsjoki, Finland: Monday, April 29 at 5:40 PM is the official ice-out date and time for River Teno in Utsjoki, Finland (Lapland). We are unusually early but the long very warm period has hastened the waters." This compares with May 3rd at 2:06 PM last year. Our closest prediction came within 29 hours of ice-out!

What's happening as of YESTERDAY (April 29, 2002) on the Nenana River, the next in line to thaw? "It appears that the river water is rising due to the extreme amount of rain we have had recently. There is open water on the Nenana River but it has not opened up as of yet. We are hooking up the clocks today, and the watchmen will go on duty this afternoon."
