Just a quick update today to give you the latest data for your map. The end of 2003 brought 29 new tulip garden sites for the Journey North International Tulip Garden Study! When and where do you think the first tulips of 2004 will appear? Watch for spring gardening updates every Friday beginning February 6.

Amidst blankets of snow and palaces of ice we learn that it is springtime in some of the Journey North gardens! Check out our new MapServer- this spring we put your data into the map with a click. Learn more about maps by looking closely. Study Pequot Lakes, MN data. Will this help you predict dates for YOUR tulips to emerge? Just a quick update today to give you the latest data for your map. Spring is showing up across the continent. What do you see and how would you describe it? Is there a pattern emerging?

Tulip Garden Update: February 20, 2004
The map is showing more green – we can really see it when we compare map information over time. Gardeners share photos and temperature data this week. Use “math-ese” to examine graphs of Mystery Garden X. Can you make an educated guess where it is? Gather some supplies and go outside to track spring in your neighborhood. Create a beautiful art book of spring’s arrival.
Tulip Garden Update: February 27, 2004
Just a quick Update today to give you the latest data for your map. Emerging tulips are “spotted under a bed of snow.” One class samples soil temperature of their tulip bed – 52 degrees. What is happening to other plants? What does soil temperature have to do with spring?
Tulip Garden Update: March 5, 2004
We’re seeing green and it isn’t yet St. Patrick’s Day. Explore the words, “typical spring”: Use temperature and tulip maps to study spring phenomena. Discover Uzbekistan and dig deep into a tulip project there. And, start looking beyond the tulip garden for more signs of spring with this activity.

Just a quick update today to give you the latest data for your map. Red dots springing up on the map now as warmer than normal spring temperatures flush the eastern half of the continent last week. Will this trend continue as strong pressure systems bring cold northern weather down into the states?
Tulip Garden Update: March 19, 2004
Snowstorms can’t stop the amazing effects of the Sun’s energy as we watch more gardens emerge and bloom this week. Look at this spring’s and last spring’s data to analyze and compare. Zoom in and focus on microclimates and emerging tulips. Try a hands-on experiment to understand ocean winds and currents. And think about starting a native plant garden to study degree-days in nature!

Just a quick update today to give you the latest data for your map. Snow drifts from last week's March snows are melting away with warmer spring temperatures. We now have 30 gardens showing red on this week's map!
Tulip Garden Update: April 2, 2004
If studying tulip garden maps helps you understand spring, the month of March will say a lot! Look closely at the world around you thought the beauty of nature as Georgia O’Keeffe did. Learn about field guides and the plants you can put into them. What is the reason for a flower? Inquiry - ask questions that lead to more questions and train your mind to think like a scientist. Do some calculations about this year’s gardens and hear from our tulip expert.

Just a quick update today to give you the latest data for your map. A whopping 43 new red gardens fill today’s map. And about those gardens on the 60 degree latitude line; who predicted that the garden in Espoo, Finland would emerge before the garden in Haines, Alaska? Take a look at our map and data for the results!
Tulip Garden Update: April 30, 2004
Warmer than average temperatures along the entire Eastern coast and we have emergence at 52 degrees North! What else can you learn from today’s maps? Learn about one of the tulip’s wild cousins – the Dogtooth Lily. Fold an origami tulip and make a display. Explore the phenomenon of flowers opening and closing. And what does “ephemeral” mean for plants?

Tulip Garden Update: May 7, 2004
Just a quick update today to give you the latest data for your map. Tulips have EMERGED in Sterling, AK: Sara Hepner writes, "Our tulips are up early this year, despite the late spring. We think the ground wasn't frozen as hard because of the heavy snow layer."
And in Cabot, VT we have BLOOMING tulips: Pamela Hull writes, “Our tulips bloomed on May 1. Three days later we had an inch of snow.”

It looks like spring has made its sweep of the continent. Study and compare maps of spring 2004 as it is recorded through your gardens this season. May brings snow and storms to some. Look for great ideas for portfolio assessment this week. One class grows then shares their blossoms. Get out the popcorn and watch some amazing plants move before your eyes!
