FLORIDA Staging Area! (+ 43 Miles)
January 14, 2009: Migration Day 79

Photo Mark Chenoweth, Whooper Happenings

The Class of 2008 was in the air after a picture-perfect launch at 7:58 EDT and Chris led them across the Florida border! We are jumping with joy and excitement! They landed at the staging area in Jefferson County, Florida. This is where the flock will be divided into two groups to finish their first journey south. With another good-weather flying day tomorrow, the migration will be finished for the seven birds headed to their winter home at St. Marks NWR. (see Journal Question below).

If you are lucky enough to be near, come for the celebration! Operation Migration has posted this map and directions, and you're invited to welcome the St. Marks Seven as they arrive on the next flyable day.

In the Classroom:

  • Today's Journal Questions:
(a ) How did you divide the birds in our question from January 9? The criteria are here, and we added a link announcing the team's decision for dividing the birds. How did your answer compare?
  • (b-for-bonus) When your teacher assigns seats or groups in your classroom, how do you think those choices are made?

Journey North is pleased to feature this educational adventure presented in cooperation with the Whooping Crane Eastern Partnership (WCEP).
