January 20, 2009: Migration Day 85

Photo Heather Ray, Operation Migration

Winds are out of the northwest at 6 mph on the ground and 30 mph aloft. The verdict: no flight in those strong winds. Cranes 824, 819, 804, 803, 818, 814 and 827 will spend their 6th day at the Jefferson County (FL) staging area. After stopovers at Madison and Gilchrist Counties (1 or two flights), they have their arrival flyover at Marion County and land at the temporary pen at Halpata. With luck, they'll take the final short flight to Chass the next day. C'mon, weather!

In the Classroom:

  • Today's Journal Questions:
(a ) Why have some crane classes had a brief layover at Halpata Preserve? Read this page to find two reasons: Halpata: Temporary Layover Site.
  • (b-for-bonus) Do you think any "graduate" cranes might visit the Halpata pen after these seven chicks arrive? (Hint: Think about the number of cranes that know about this as "their" pen. Think about today's date.)

Journey North is pleased to feature this educational adventure presented in cooperation with the Whooping Crane Eastern Partnership (WCEP).
