No Go: Still Big Winds(+ 0 Miles )
November 3, 2008: Migration Day 18

Photo Operation Migration

Winds on the ground are blowing from the wrong direction. It's the same story aloft, with headwinds at 20 mph at the departure site and 30 mph closer to their Illinois stopover site. It will take a change in the weather to produce flyable conditions, and that change is coming soon. Progress has been stalled at 95 miles since Oct. 29, Day 13.

In the Classroom

  • Today's Journal Questions:
    (a) Liz at Operation Migration reminds us that the longest delay at this Green County stopover is 7 days (in 2004). The only years with NO down days here were 2003 and 2006. How many days have they been here this year? What do you think will happen in the next few days?
(b-for-bonus) The ground crew let the birds out for exercise yesterday and watched as they flew off toward the north, climbing slightly higher with each wing beat. Just as Heather wondered what would happen if they decided to keep going, they turned and began their slow gliding return to drop down at the pen site. Watch the video shot yesterday by Heather by visiting Operation Migration on YouTube. Record your thoughts after viewing. What surprised you? What sounds did you hear? Why are these exercise sessions important?
