Down at Stopover #3 (+0 Miles)
November 2, 2009: Migration Day 18

Before sunrise today, the calm air changed as a cold front moved through and sent winds out of the WNW. Blowing at 6 mph on the surface and 25 mph aloft, they set the leaves to rustling. Yesterday's jumping-for-joy excitment over a great flight with (NO crates needed!) will not happen today. But the cranes are happy pecking and poking at pumpkin parts. How are winds and weather central to the migration? Will the weather where you live today affect your choice of activities?

Did you see the flight on the TrikeCam mounted on Chris's wing? If not, review archived footage here. And see the CraneCam views of the birds in their pen at Stopover #3.

In the Classroom

  • Today's Journal Question: (a) How many miles have the young birds covered so far? Of all the days of migration, which do you think has been the best day and why? (b-for-bonus) Yesterday they took off at 7:26 and landed at 8:21. How long did they fly? What facts above will help you figure out the speed (miles per hour) of yesterday's flight? Approximately how fast did they fly to cover the distance?
  • Record Keeping: On yesterday's flght, what happened for the first time that was very hopeful? On this down day, you may wish to add a note to your Migration Comparison Chart or update your chart of miles flown.

Journey North is pleased to feature this educational adventure presented in cooperation with the Whooping Crane Eastern Partnership (WCEP).
